At the high-frequency, high-energy end of the spectrum, ultraviolet, X-ray, and gamma-ray radiation unveil the physical and chemical properties of objects that are incredibly hot and energetic.

These wavelength regimes are particularly useful for studying the hot gas swirling around black holes and neutron stars; galactic haloes; interactions between cosmic rays and interstellar gas; and the rarefied outer atmospheres of stars.
