JOHN. PAUL, GEORGE, AND RINGO
Or as they are officially designated, minor planets 4147 Lennon,
4148 McCartney, 4149 Harrison, and 4150 Stair.
Unlike other astronomical objects, asteroids can carry the names of living people or commonplace objects. Whoever discovers an asteroid is allowed to suggest a name for it, and the name is usually accepted by the ruling body, a committee of the International Astronomical Union. The name is combined with a number reflecting the asteroid's order of discovery: I Ceres was the first asteroid found. With more than 35,000 asteroids, identified, fewer than half have names. The names of the first few hundred asteroids tend to be of females from classical mythology (16 Psyche, 34 Circe). Other religions and mythologies were explored (77 Freia, 1170 Siva), then wives and girlfriends followed (607 Jenny, 1434 Margot).
As the number of asteroids grew, the list broadened to include 2825 Crosby and 4305 Clapton, 3656 Hemingway and 4474 Proust, 4511 Rembrandt and 6677 Renoir, and even 6000 United Nations.
